The Lundmark Group Offers 7 Ways To Make A Small Bedroom Look Bigger When Preparing To Sell Your Home

The key to making a small space look bigger in your home is to keep everything light and airy. Create the illusion of space by keeping the room simple. Here are 7 things you can do to create a light and spacious look if you have a small bedroom and you want to show it in the best light to potential buyers.

1) Light and Bright

Color can create the illusion of space. Choose light and cool colors for paint, rugs, bedding and window treatments. Calm blues, natural tones such as ivory or light beige, and even white are ideal for small spaces. Warm colors can create a cozy space, but they will also make the space seem darker and smaller. Choose solid colors for bedding and wall coverings. The use of too much pattern will make the room feel cluttered and closed in.

If you enjoy bright colors, use a few bold accent pieces or pillows to add just a pop of color to the room without overwhelming the small space.

2) Less is More

Try to avoid too much of anything while selling your Chester County and Philadelphia area home. Choose a few simple pieces of furniture rather than cluttering or filling up the space. Skip heavy footboards and headboards. Try to find pieces that double as storage, for example, beds with drawers underneath or lamp tables with shelves on the bottom.

3) Well Placed Art

Keep wall decor simple as well. Gallery walls are perfect for a large living room or imposing master bedroom, but they will feel cluttered in a small space. Instead, spread out two or three larger pieces of art that will draw the eye around the room and make it feel more expansive.

4) Mirrors

Mirrors are an excellent way to bounce more light throughout the room. For optimal effect place a large mirror across from a window. This will give the illusion of spaciousness and add more natural light to the room. A mirror that reaches toward the ceiling will also draw attention to the height of the room and make it feel larger.

5) Spread Out Lighting

Instead of using one overhead light that illuminates one area of the room and leaves dark corners, place light in several places throughout the room. A well placed lamp, sconce, floor lamp, pendant light or even chandelier can brighten the edges of a room, making it feel larger.

For reading light, consider using sconces on the wall next to the bed rather than lamps. This will free up room on a small night stand for a simple piece of decor or small basket to place personal items.

6) Avoid Clutter

Nightstands and dressers collect clutter in our Chester County homes for sale. The more you have out in the open, the smaller the space will feel. Find a designated spot out of sight for the clutter during showings of your home. If you don’t have a place for it, consider donating the item.  Don’t let clutter take over, try to create a unified look with a only few pieces of complementary decor so that buyers see your home, not the items inside the home.

7) Keep The Floor Open

The more space that can be seen on the floor, the bigger the room will feel. Try to use furniture with feet or legs so that there is more visible floor space. Hang a few floating bookshelves on the wall instead of using a bookcase.

In a small bedroom, you want to keep the space comfortable, inviting, open, and minimal. A small bedroom can be a cozy haven with the right decor. Remember to choose only the furniture pieces you need, keep colors light and bright and eliminate clutter. You can still have your dream bedroom, even when you don’t have much space to work with.
