Spotlight on Coatesville Graduates!

Featuring: Colleen Quinn-Maxwell: Owner of award winning Kohler’s Bakery in Avalon and teacher in Lower Moreland

Each month, our team will be featuring fellow Coatesville High School Graduates and what they are up to now! Our next featured graduate that we are proud to present is Colleen Quinn-Maxwell!  So we asked…”what have you been up to since graduation day in Colleen?”

1. I have taken on a number of professions since leaving CASH.  I graduated from West Chester University with both a B.S.     in  Athletic Training/Sports Medicine and a Post Bacc in K-12 Health and Physical Education. Additionally I earned a MAED from Gratz College.   I have worked at the collegiate, high school and middle school levels as both a certified athletic trainer and teacher in anatomy, biology, health and physical education.

I am fortunate enough to currently work for the Lower Moreland Township School District as a high school health and physical education teacher.  I am also the founder/advisor of the Students Against Melanoma Club and Co-Sponsor of the freshmen class.

Being a teacher is an incredibly rewarding profession, but I am also grateful to have owned my own award winning bakery business Kohler’s Bakery as well for the past 12 years in Avalon, NJ. Check out Kohler’s Bakery here:

http://kohlersbakery.com/

  1. I have always loved learning about the human body, helping other people improve their health and also continuing to be a part of the long standing tradition that is my 70 year old business.  Yes, ironic to be a health teacher and own a Bakery business but life can always be enjoyed in moderation.

  1. I was fortunate enough to be a resident of Coatesville since birth until shortly after college and attended Friendship Elementary, Reeceville Elementary, North Brandywine and CASH.  My mom and brother both taught in the district and my husband is currently a 5th grade teacher at Caln Elementary and has been a Coatesville teacher for 12 years.

  1.  My time growing up in Coatesville was fulfilling from my academic classes, the stage for Meistersingers, the field for my soccer games to the track for meets, all people in my life influenced me to have strong character, look out for others, and be resilient.  Life is not always easy but if you work hard, good things will come your way.

  1. There are so many great memories to remember from high school.  First, I was honored to be named our class president. Truly humbled by my classmates by that title.  I will never forget our trip of a lifetime with Senora Campayo to Spain. An incredible chance to experience this trip with friends.  One of the simplest memories that is long lasting though were the moments during Meistersingers Carol Service when we walked in and the moment we walked out under candlelight singing to our families at their seats. An entire community coming together for that tradition was always an incredible experience.

  1.  I am fortunate enough to have some of my closest friends be ones that I grew up with 25-30 years ago.  That shows the strength of the friendships that are built in a community like Coatesville. I am very lucky as I met my husband, also a Coatesville native, while growing up.  We now have 2 boys, ages 6 and 3 and have been married 8 years.

Thank you Colleen for sharing your impressive career and family life after graduating from Coatesville!!!

Spotlight on Successful Coatesville Graduates

Mike Armento, Owner Of Crossfit Rock Solid

TLG: What inspired or gave you the idea to start Crossfit Rocksolid?

Mike: After school, I jumped right into the workforce and picked up many of the bad habits that are looked at as “part of the norm.” I was eating and drinking whatever I wanted until one day I realized that my health had spiraled out of control. I was 28, my wife was pregnant with our first daughter and I wanted to make some changes in my health.

After about a year of fooling around aimlessly at the gym I discovered CrossFit. For 2 years I learned as much as I could about CrossFit and I noticed my health was at its peak! At the time, the program was still making a name for itself and I started to offer what I had learned to others with a few informal workouts. One client turned into two, two into four, four into eight until I had a consistent dozen people at each of my workouts.

I knew CrossFit would be BIG so I continued to learn about program, taking any and every class, course or certification I could find. Eventually I took a leap of faith, quit my well paying job and opened CrossFit RockSolid in my in-laws gymnastic center….Metzler’s Gymnastics.

TLG: How long have you been in business?

Mike: We have officially opened our doors in January 2011. So, just over 7 years.

TLG: How many members do you currently have?

Mike: Right now, we have about 160 members of all backgrounds, ages and fitness levels.

TLG: What do you think makes CFRS unique?

Mike: When you walk through our doors you are considered family. Our membership is extremely close but also extremely welcoming to new members. We have celebrated weddings, babies, professional promotions, and losses together, in addition to achieving fitness goals. I want every member to feel that the hour spent at CFRS is one of the best of the day!

TLG: What do you think has made you successful?

Mike: I don’t think success can be measured in a monetary figure. To me, waking up every morning and knowing something that I’ve created will help someone either physically, mentally or socially is a pretty cool feeling. We, myself and staff, truly care about each member. If someone has a problem, no matter what it is, we will do our best address it. We see our members as people on a mission to better themselves not dollar signs. This attention has let our membership know that we are in it for the long haul with them. In return, they end up staying with us for a very long time.

TLG: Is there anything that you learned from your time at Coatesville High School that has helped you?

Mike: I transferred to CASH in 10th grade. At that age you are always nervous about fitting in and making new friends. I soon realized that it wouldn’t be as hard as I thought. I was welcomed by so many people. (Now that I think about it, maybe that welcoming feeling was the inspiration for what I want CFRS to be!) I have kept in contact with many of the friends I gained during my time at CASH. They are my best friends, business partners and industry peers.

Tips For Downsizing After The Kids Move Away

It took some time, but it finally happened. Your children have all grown up and moved away, leaving you and your spouse in the old family home. There are a lot of benefits to this, but as you look around at those empty rooms and unused space, you may start to wonder if it’s time to move.

These days, many so-called “empty nesters” are downsizing into a new but smaller home. Although this is a big change that requires you to get rid of some possessions in your house, read on to learn more about the advantages to downsizing for empty nesters.

Why Downsizing Works

Is it the right time for you and your spouse to downsize? HGTV.com explains there are several downsizing questions you need to ask first. Does a big house matter a lot to you? Are you planning on hosting big gathering many times each year? Then maybe downsizing won’t be a good idea.

But for most people (empty nesters or not), there are great reasons to move into a smaller house. Dave Ramsey shows there are some major financial benefits to downsizing. Right now, you’re paying for rooms you don’t need. Even if you fully own your house by now, you still have to pay utilities and taxes on those spaces.

In addition, you are probably going to sell your current place for much more than the new, smaller home will cost. You can use that windfall to either pay down any debts or loans (goodbye credit card bills) or turn it into a nice nest egg for your upcoming retirement.

Reducing Your Clutter

Before you can start enjoying the advantages of downsizing, you need to figure out what to do with all your belongings — and those your children left behind. If you’re moving into a smaller place, you simply do not have room for everything in your current one.

At first, this can be easy. Money Crashers recommends you get rid of b ig items that you won’t need. If you’re changing from three bedrooms to two, donate or sell the bed and dresser used in the extra bedroom. Then you can move onto heirlooms and smaller possessions. This is a perfect time to have your kids come back and take their stuff! In addition, you can declutter by handing them some heirlooms or belongings you don’t want to be thrown out but don’t have room for.

If you’re feeling really overwhelmed by this task, it might be time to call in the help of a professional organizer. According to HomeAdvisor , on average it costs about $483 to hire a professional organizer, but in some areas it can cost as little as $100. Sometimes, the best thing you need is someone unattached to all those things in your house so you can objectively decide what to keep.

Finding The Right Place

You’ve decided to downsize, and you have a plan to declutter your home. But where are you going? Finding the right home when downsizing isn’t too hard, but as Sabrina’s Organizing shows, there are a few things you have to consider.

This might be your last home for a while, so make sure you can age well here. That means keeping the bedroom on the first floor , railings on stairs, and easy-to-use faucets. And although you want a smaller house, you need to make sure it has some storage space for the belongings you couldn’t get rid of.

Be A Smart Empty Nester

Now that you and your spouse are officially empty nesters, you need to consider downsizing your home. Look for a smaller place where you can age well, then start getting rid of the things you don’t need. This way, you can start saving money and enjoy a brand new home!
